The US Pacific Fleet said the guided-missile destroyer USS McCampbell conducted the operation in the Sea of Japan on Wednesday.

The US Navy sent a guided-missile destroyer Wednesday to challenge Russian Federation in the Sea of Japan. In the South China Sea, despite perceptions that U.S. FONOPs have been exclusively conducted against Chinese claims, the U.S. Navy has also challenged excessive maritime claims made by U.S. allies and partners, including the Philippines and Vietnam. However, Russia claims the entirety of Peter the Great Bay, extending well beyond 12 nautical miles from sections of the coast.

"These operations demonstrate that the United States will fly, swim and act wherever permitted by worldwide law".

The US military responded this week to what it calls Russia's "unlawful and destabilizing actions" in Ukraine and elsewhere by pushing back against Moscow on the seas and in the air.

Vladivostok, in Russia's far southeast, is home to the country's Pacific Fleet.

A spokeswoman for Russia's Foreign Ministry said Russian Federation "scrupulously abides by the provisions of the treaty, and the US side knows this".

Tensions between the two nations have reached boiling point after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's announced the US would pull out of the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty in 60 days unless Russian Federation addresses what he called Moscow's "flagrant disregard" of its terms.

CNN reported that the State Department has notified Turkey of the intent to send a warship through the Bosporus and the Dardanelles, which requires a 15-day notice under the terms of the 1936 Montreux Convention.

Ultimately, however, Russia's actions and its detention of Ukrainian sailors prompted Trump to cancel a planned meeting with Putin during the G20 summit.

The US has also repeatedly sent ships to the parts of East China Sea claimed by Beijing, drawing repeated protests from China - most recently last week, when the guided missile cruiser USS Chancellorsville (CG-62) sailed through the area.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, speaking at a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation conference in Brussels Tuesday, said the alliance "will collectively develop [a] set of responses that demonstrate to Russians this behavior is unacceptable".
