E-cigarette usage nearly doubles in US high-schools

Teen vaping continues to rise while other drug use declines, survey finds Vaping among teens on the rise, according to study

There is a new trend among teens, namely, vaping.

However, marijuana use remains steady among high schoolers, with almost 6 percent of 12th graders reporting daily use.

The students surveyed said they had vaped nicotine, marijuana or simply flavoring.

"Teens are clearly attracted to the marketable technology and flavorings seen in vaping devices", says Volkow.

The surgeon general is speaking out strongly on the issue, saying, "We have evidence-based strategies to prevent tobacco use that can be applied to e-cigarettes".

While tobacco use has been effectively controlled among USA teenagers, nicotine vaping has nearly doubled among high school students from 11 per cent in 2017 to 20.9 in 2018 leading a large number back to nicotine use and addiction, a survey has found.

Vaping involves using an electronic cigarette, hookah or similar device to inhale certain vapors or aerosols, which could contain substances such as nicotine, marijuana or flavoring.

Nicotine is highly addictive, and experts said e-cigarettes are getting a whole new generation hooked.

In other words, the rise of vaping has reversed recent progress in turning kids away from nicotine, Miech said.

Other e-liquid flavors seemed to be squarely aimed at kids, with packages that resembled frosted cookies and sour sweets. Nicotine is known to raise blood pressure and has been linked to heart disease.

More than 37 percent of high school seniors say they've vaped, which is up from just over a quarter previous year.

In an advisory Tuesday, Surgeon General Jerome Adams said parents, teachers, health professionals and government officials must take "aggressive steps" to keep children from using e-cigarettes.

Interestingly, regular tobacco use remained at its lowest point with only 3.6 per cent of high school seniors smoking daily, compared to 22.4 per cent two decades ago.

Alcohol use and binge drinking also continue to decline among teens, according to the survey.

The Tobacco Product Directive (TPD) is the legal framework proposed by the European Committee ENVI to regulate tobacco products and its derivatives in Europe.

What about vaping? "Vaping mostly is an individual activity", said David Jernigan, a Boston University researcher who tracks alcohol use. Students even take hits from their Juuls in class or school restrooms.

"Our intent was never to have youth use Juul products", said company spokesman Ted Kwong.

Twenty-four other California counties or cities have restricted the sale of these products, according to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. In Minnesota, nine communities do.

"This is something that requires immediate action to protect our youth", Hill said.
