Prior to the boy leaving the hospital, though, medical staff detected he had a fever. Doctors eventually discharged him with prescriptions for amoxicillin and Ibuprofen. Alonzo lost consciousness on the way to the hospital and could not be revived.

The boy was pronounced dead minutes before midnight. Nielsen's statement on the death of an 8 year old migrant child in @CBP custody is really remarkable.

The boy was identified as Felipe Alonzo-Gomez, US Rep. Joaquin Castro said. Lindsey Graham, Feinstein requested a hearing "on the care and treatment of children in the custody of Customs and Border Protection".

Jackelin Caal Maquin, a 7-year-old girl also from Guatemala, died of dehydration and septic shock on December 8, two days after she was taken into custody with her father.

Her body was returned to Guatemala on Sunday, CNN reported. We do not know what will happen.

Padilla says Agustin Gomez told him Felipe wasn't sick when they were detained at the U.S. -Mexico border on December 18 or in the five days to follow. "They are meant to handle single adults usually traveling for seasonal work" from Mexico, he said. She died in the hospital on December 8. They added that the exams are sometimes "conducted by individuals that are under contract support services to the Border Patrol". When asked about DHS Secretary Nielsen's handling of the Guatemalan child's death this official replied, "What else can she do?" A statement from CBP explained that he was taken to a hospital in New Mexico after an agent noticed signs of illness. He is held for continued observation. The agency is also reviewing options for releasing migrants to temporary housing and is considering bringing in "surge" medical assistance from other agencies. They were told to go back to CBP custody. That evening, Felipe started vomiting, and his father declined medical help because his son had been feeling better, CBP said. Homeland Security officials also said Felipe initially appeared to be well.

The father, who has not been identified by USA officials, has yet to provide his own version of the events. She had traveled more than 3,200 kilometers with her father to the US border. Emergency responders determined that she had been without food and water for several days.

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has yet to give an official cause of death for the boy, prompting Democratic lawmakers to intensify calls for an investigation. Half an hour later Felipe and his father are transferred to a medical center.

"Results of nasal and lung swabs have tested positive for influenza B", the Office of the Medical Investigator said in a statement released Thursday.

Meghan Markle's due date may be sooner than expected
In the weeks following the announcement, Meghan was cradling her baby bump and showing off her growing belly in fitted outfits. She said it was "especially lovely" to have a chat with the duchess "as one mother to another".

"I'm not going to die, papa, " she said Felipe told him.

Secretary Nielsen placed the blame for the influx of young children on parents, suggesting that America has "an immigration system that rewards parents for sending their children across the border alone, a system that prevents parents who bring their children on a unsafe and illegal journey from facing consequences for their actions, an asylum process that is not able to quickly help those who qualify for asylum".

"This changing dynamic is the direct result of obvious draw factors: an immigration system that rewards parents for sending their children across the border alone, a system that prevents parents who bring their children on a unsafe and illegal journey from facing consequences for their actions, an asylum process that is not able to quickly help those who qualify for asylum, a system that encourages fraudulent claims, and a system that encourages bad actors to coach aliens into making frivolous claims", she said.

So Agustin Gomez grabbed his son Felipe and set out, despite the numerous dangers in such a journey for anyone, much less a child.

CBP typically holds children for no more than a few days.

Still, the death of a child in custody is "an extraordinarily rare occurrence", McAleenan told CBS.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen on Wednesday called the death of a child in government custody "deeply concerning and heartbreaking", and reiterated her call for "parents to not place their children at risk by taking a risky journey north".

In a letter to Republican Sen. Her death - which brought down heavy criticism on USA immigration authorities - is also under investigation.
