Hackers spent roughly four years inside Starwood's networks, the company announced November 30. That system had been used at Marriott subsidiary Starwood, and its smaller brands, including W Hotels, St. Regis, Sheraton Hotels & Resorts, Westin Hotels & Resorts, Element Hotels, Aloft Hotels, The Luxury Collection, Tribute Portfolio, Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts, Four Points by Sheraton and Design Hotels. The company also provided a new accounting of the number of guests who had passport and credit-card data exposed.

When Marriott initially issued its November 30 press release about the incident the company had not yet completed the analytics work to identify duplicative information. Marriott officials said the company is in the process of setting up a resource to allow customers to check whether their passport number was part of the breach.

"This does not, however, mean that information about 383 million unique guests was involved, as in many instances, there appear to be multiple records for the same guest", Marriott said in a statement published online Friday.

Originally Marriott estimated that there were 500 million guests who had their information compromised but is now saying that more than 383 million records were actually involved. It is still investigating how many stolen payment card numbers were not encrypted.

Marriott International said Friday that 383 million customer records were stolen in a data breach last month, down from the hotel chain's original estimate of 500 million.

Marriott said it had no evidence to suggest that the perpetrators had the master encryption key to unlock encrypted data. Regardless, Marriott says there isn't any evidence that the hackers acquired the tools needed to decrypted the card info.

Finally, Marriott now believes around 8.6 million encrypted payment cards were impacted by the data breach. Marriott believes that there may be a small number (fewer than 2,000) of 15-digit and 16-digit numbers in other fields in the data involved that might be unencrypted payment card numbers. The US call center number is 1-877-273-9481.

The company also has updated estimates about how many passport numbers and how many payment methods were actually compromised. The frequently asked questions on https://info.starwoodhotels.com have been updated and may be further supplemented from time to time. Marriott International recently reported one of the largest customer data security breaches in recent history, involving Starwood Hotels & Resorts, which the company bought in 2016 for $13.3 billion.
