Trump Repeats Calls For A Border Wall As Shutdown Negotiations Continue

"But it'll be less obtrusive, stronger, and we're able to use our great companies to make it, by using steel", Trump told reporters at the White House on his return from Camp David.

The National Emergencies Act allows the president to declare a national emergency, providing a specific reason for it.

In Washington Mike Pence, the vice president, restarted talks with key Democrat representatives in an attempt to break the deadlock with the looming threat that Mr Trump may invoke emergency powers in order to get the wall built. Democratic Senators are making it clear they will block such plans, arguing bills funding the government should be first.

Following a Friday meeting between Democratic leaders, including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, it was revealed the president is prepared for a lengthy shutdown.

The US government shutdown that has halted pay for hundreds of thousands of federal workers began its third week with no end in sight, as Vice-President Mike Pence, top White House officials and senior congressional aides met for more than two hours without reaching a deal to reopen the government.

The US president reportedly said he preferred to call the action a "strike". His negotiations with Democrats are at an impasse over funding for a border wall. More recent figures, on the other hand, seem to spread the blame around. This would require a statutory change, along with reallocation of State Department funds to establish in-country processing capacities at Northern Triangle consulates and embassies. Scientists say the effects from these missed opportunities will be felt for a long time. Trump said on Twitter that "not much headway" was made on Saturday, and he told reporters on Sunday that the next meeting was unlikely to produce results either.

The president said he wanted to highlight the border fence renovations already under construction as he continues to make the case for more border security. During the Korean War in 1952, President Harry Truman sought to take over U.S. steel factories to keep them producing in the face of a planned national strike by industry workers. However, it does provide some funding for border security to be spent on improving existing fencing and for new technology used by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.

Salvini has called on Malta to assume its responsibilities and take in the rescue boats, arguing they are the closest. Francis said he was directing a "fervent appeal" to the leaders to "show concrete solidarity toward these persons".

As the impact of the shutdown spreads - with reports that it may affect food subsidies for the poor and the tax refunds many people depend on each year - Trump insisted that Americans, even those directly affected, understood his stance.

"We're asking for $5.6 billion". He said much of the wall had been built, though it hasn't.

The border wall is the primary sticking point in negotiations with Democrats in the US Congress to end a partial government shutdown, which has dragged on for 17 days. "So that's a non-starter".

But Smith also warned Trump "would be wide open to a court challenge" if he made such a move.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders, appearing on "Fox News Sunday", said the Trump administration is looking at "every option available" to get the needed money, including bypassing Congress if necessary by declaring a national emergency to build the border wall.

"We just can't afford to do business that way", Schiff said.
