Unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Hyundai's so-called Elevate vehicle, claimed to be the first ever auto with moveable legs, borrows technologies from the worlds of robotics and electric vehicles to create a vehicle that can drive, walk and even climb across some of the most rugged terrain. Each leg is afforded five degrees of freedom, while each wheel is packed with its own motor enabling the UMV to maintain its progress even is one or two wheels can't get traction.

Legs can also be folded away, allowing the vehicle to drive like any other auto on the road.

When a tsunami or quake hits, current rescue vehicles can only deliver first responders to the edge of the debris field.

Elevate can even walk in different styles: mammalian or reptilian style gaits.

The Hyundai Elevate concept is based on a modular EV platform that can switch between different bodies for specific situations.

Elevate has been dubbed the world's first "Ultimate Mobility Vehicle" and is being revealed in concept form at this week's Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas, US.

The comments came as Pence briefed reporters on the 17th day of the partial government shutdown . The address is scheduled for 8 p.m.

The Elevate is envisioned as the Ultimate Utility Vehicle, and was created to ride on a set of retractable "legs" that can raise the cabin in the air and allow the vehicle to climb over 5-foot walls or across 5-foot gaps.

According to Hyundai, the vehicle can can climb a 1.5 metre wall, step over a 1.5m gap, walk over diverse terrain, and achieve a 4.6m wide track width, while keeping the occupants level.

But the technology used for Elevate can go well beyond emergency situations. "Elevate can drive to the scene and climb right over flood debris or crumbled concrete", said John Suh, Hyundai vice president and head of Hyundai CRADLE.

"Imagine a vehicle stranded in a snow ditch just 10 feet off the highway being able to walk or climb over the treacherous terrain, back to the road potentially saving its injured passengers", said said David Byron, design manager at Sundberg-Ferar.

Inside the Elevate, passengers would experience a vehicle fully engineered to tackle the roughest terrain comfortably.

We might not see Elevate attending to natural disasters or roaming the streets imminently, but it's not just for show; Hyundai has been working on the concept with industrial design consultancy Sundberg-Ferar for nearly three years. "Elevate is part of our various "Last-Mile" technologies and solutions and it also has "Last-100 Yards" capability too".
