Jaguar Land Rover Chief Executive Ralf Speth said he had serious concerns about the impact of a hard Brexit but it was not possible to predict what steps might be required if that happens.

Brexit has made the future of the UK's auto manufacturing industry uncertain, with Toyota and Vauxhall among those to warn of negative impacts in the event of a hard Brexit.

Sales of cars in China dropped by 6%, to 22.7 million, during 2018, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) in the market's first decline for two decades.

The BBC has reported that management, marketing and administrative roles are expected to be affected along with a number of production staff.

The company said it will produce next-generation electric motors at its engine plant in Wolverhampton, and assemble batteries at Hams Hall, also in the U.K.'s West Midlands region.

The company employs around 10,000 people in Solihull - its biggest factory - and around 3,200 at its Jaguar factory in Castle Bromwich, where a three-day week was introduced in the autumn.

In China, demand has been adversely impacted by consumer uncertainty following import duty changes and escalating trade tensions with the US. JLR said it regularly reviewed "its production schedules to ensure market demand is balanced globally".

The job cuts come as Ford and JLR have been hit by a fall in demand for diesel-engined cars and after European policy-makers last month agreed stricter pollution limits, forcing auto makers to accelerate investments to make electric cars.

"This is not about making the business today more efficient but completely redesigning it", Ford's European president Steve Armstrong told the FT.

"Given the difficulties that they're going through.to add further costs and further disruption from a no-deal Brexit, it's clear why they've been so clear that this would be against their interests", said business minister Greg Clark.

They said in response: It is, of course, bad news that Jaguar Land Rover is being forced to make further job cuts. It is also working to ramp up its electric vehicle production.

The automaker said it would start off by offering voluntary redundancies to United Kingdom workers.

The British automaker lost £90 million ($160 million) during the third quarter of 2018 thanks primarily to a big sales dip in China, Brexit-related woes, and reduced demand for diesel-powered vehicles and traditional sedan models.
