Theresa May tells MPs 'see you next Tuesday' as Brexit vote confirmed

Houses of Parliament Image MPs are calling for the government to 'change course'

Britain's government and its lawmakers were set to clash Wednesday, as Prime Minister Theresa May brought her little-loved Brexit deal back to Parliament, a month after postponing a vote on the agreement to stave off near-certain defeat.

There was a major row in the Commons over whether Wednesday´s amendment could even be put to a vote, with Speaker John Bercow apparently disregarding the advice of his own clerk that it could not.

Amid chaotic scenes in the chamber, MPs backed an amendment requiring the PM to come back to the Commons within three working days to set out her Plan B if her Withdrawal Agreement is rejected in next week's vote.

"But it is also the intention, if that were not to take place, that we respond quickly to provide certainty on the way forward following that vote".

Hinting at one path of action MPs could try and force the prime minister down, Sir Keir told MPs: "There is a question of the extension of article 50, which may well be inevitable now, given the position that we are in, but of course we can only seek it, because the other 27 [EU member states] have to agree".

"Obviously, the next thing to do immediately after that is for there to be a vote of confidence in the government", he told BBC Radio 4.

The government said it was an "inconvenience" but would not stop its preparations for leaving the EU.

The vote comes as MPs are due to begin a five-day debate on May's Brexit deal after it was delayed in December until after the parliamentary recess.

The leader of the opposition Labour party, Jeremy Corbyn said: "This vote is an important step to prevent a no-deal Brexit".

Yannick Carrasco "has been offered to Arsenal" as the Belgian looks to cut short his time at Chinese side Dalian Yifang. Arsenal are not the only club to have been linked with a move for Carrasco this month.

The vote came hard on the heels of Tuesday night's Commons defeat for the Government on a motion meant to limit its powers to change taxes in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

The House voted by 308 to 297 in favour of the amendment tabled by the pro-Remain Tory MP Dominic Grieve with the support of other Conservative rebels.

"This amendment does not change the fact that the United Kingdom is leaving the European Union on the 29 March, and it will not stop the government from collecting tax", a spokesman said.

"I'm sorry but there is a distinction between a motion and an amendment", declared Mr Bercow, at which Mr Francois yelled "ridiculous" and "utter sophistry".

Since being elected in 2009, he has angered many Tory MPs for his handling of business and treatment of MPs, but he also has many admirers, particularly on the Labour benches, who believe he has transformed the way Parliament holds the executive to account.

With less than three months before Britain is due to quit the European Union, parliament began a five-day battle over May's Brexit plan with a show of force - undermining her preferred timetable if lawmakers vote down her blueprint next Tuesday.

"I've been in contact with European leaders. about MPs' concerns", she said.

Some Brexit supporters say a no-deal exit is the only way to truly leave the bloc and that warnings of the economic consequences have been overblown to drum up support for May's plan.

"We're all focused in the government on winning parliamentary support in the vote that's coming up next week", he told reporters as he arrived at the meeting in Brussels.
