"I have made a decision to run and will be making a formal announcement within the next week", Rep. Gabbard, 37, an Iraq War veteran as well as the first Hindu and first Samoan-American elected to the U.S. Congress, told CNN.

She was one of a handful of Democrats who met with Trump during the presidential transition, amid speculation that she could become United Nations ambassador or secretary of state.

Gabbard said in a CNN interview slated to air Saturday night that she will be formally announcing her candidacy within the next week.

Gabbard threw her support behind Sanders' 2016 presidential campaign ― an endorsement that led her to publicly resign from her role as vice chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee.

According to Gabbard, 37, her campaign would primarily focus on "the issue of war and peace".

She added, "There are a lot of reasons for me to make this decision".

These issues include health care access, criminal justice reform and climate change. Gabbard moved to Hawaii when she was two and embraced Hinduism as a teenager and is well-versed in the scriptures, PTI reported.

Ms Gabbard was one of the most prominent lawmakers to back Sanders over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratic presidential primary. She stepped down in 2004 to fight in the Iraq War. She also endorsed Keith Ellision for DNC chair in 2017.

Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard is running for President in 2020.

She served on the Honolulu City Council before getting elected to the state Legislature.

Last year, Gabbard came under fire for an impromptu meeting with Syrian President Bashar Hafez al-Assad during what she described as a fact-finding trip to discuss possible solutions to end the war in Syria. More recently she blasted President Trump for being "Saudi Arabia's bitch". Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and former Vice President Joe Biden for the party's nomination.

Gabbard was born in American Samoa and was raised in Hawaii, where she is known to surf. In her stint in Hawaii politics, Gabbard opposed the state's legalization of civil unions for same-sex couples, saying at one forum that Democrats "should be representing the views of the people, not a small number of homosexual extremists". Her participation in the race will raise the profile of some important issues, for which libertarians should be glad.

She had a run-in with Harris this week, accusing her of religious bigotry for her opposition to a nominee for federal judgeship because he belonged to a Catholic organisation called the Knights of Columbus.
