Apple's Bent iPad Pro Controversy Gets Its Own Support Page

Bent iPads: Apple says you are looking at it wrong Apple Details 2018 iPad Pro ‘Co-Molding’ Enclosure Manufacturing Process

In November some users on MacRumors forum reported seeing a bend from the mid-section of the device after normal usage, such as carrying a new iPad in a bag on a weekend trip.

"iPad Pro cellular models now feature Gigabit-class LTE, with support for more cellular bands than any other tablet". The iPad Pro uses a new manufacturing processes that injects plastic into milled channels in the aluminum enclosure. "After the plastic cools, the entire enclosure is finished with a precision CNC machining operation, yielding a seamless integration of plastic and aluminum into a single, strong enclosure", it says.

Now the company has gone further, publishing a support page explaining the manufacturer and testing process of the iPad Pro, and explaining that the way the tablet is made is the reason some people see a bend.

Apple has instructions on its support page for consumers who think their iPad Pro doesn't meet the specifications outlined, but as long as the bend is below "400 microns of deviation", it doesn't seem to count as a problem.

According to Apple, the new design and the presence of antenna modems on the new iPad versions might make it easier for the slight bend to be visible by the customer from certain angles. These small variances do not affect the strength of the enclosure or the function of the product and will not change over time through normal use.

The iPad Pro's bending controversy has reached nowhere near the level of attention as that of the iPhone 6 Plus a few years back, but it's nice to finally receive official word from Apple on the subject.

In neighboring Slovakia, the mountain rescue service said a Slovak man, 37, died from an avalanche in the Mala Fatra mountains. An Australian family's winter holiday has ended in tragedy after a teenager was killed while skiing in Austria .

Apple reiterated the previously shared tolerance of 400 microns, which is a stricter allowance than previous models of the iPad.

Interestingly, this co-molding process isn't used as an excuse for some iPads' slight bends, but instead it's presented as evidence of Apple pursuing even stricter flatness standards than ever before.

Despite this, several of the bent iPad Pro pictures that users shared show noticeable warps that appear to be greater than 400 microns.

Whether you get it as a gift or gifted it to yourself, there's a little bit of extra prep work to do if you've just gotten your hands on a new 2018 iPad Pro. And yeah, that doesn't sound like a lot, but then the iPad Pro is only 5.9mm thick, which suddenly makes it sound like a big deal again.

Of course, it's possible some of the devices that are exhibiting bends in excess of Apple's tolerances are mistreating their devices.
