Flu season poised to be milder than last year's

"Just to say it's not too late to get your shot".

"If (this strain) continues to be the predominant virus, that is what we'd expect", Fry said.

Last year, when the more virulent H3N2 virus was predominant, millions more got sick, almost 1 million were hospitalized, and as many as 80,000 died, according to the CDC.

CDC does not know the exact number of people who have been sick and affected by influenza because influenza is not a reportable disease in most areas of the United States.

In California, Fresno County has seen six flu-related deaths since October, the Fresno Bee reported on Friday, while a total of 42 lives have been lost throughout the state, according to the Los Angeles Times.

We're in the midst of flu season, and millions of people have caught the virus already. Further, the flu season is still ongoing, so the severity indicators are still expected to rise.

Trump says he has nothing to hide about meetings with Putin
No evidence has publicly emerged that Trump was secretly in contact with or took direction from Russian officials, the Times said. Trump's ex-national security advisor, Michael Flynn, has pleaded guilty to lying to investigators about his Moscow ties.

Roughly 70,000 to 80,000 have been hospitalized.

Data presented in FluView allow CDC to track flu activity, but do not provide exact case counts, with the exception of flu-associated pediatric deaths and human infections with novel influenza A viruses, which are nationally notifiable. A new study, led by the Computational Health Informatics Program (CHIP) at Boston Children's Hospital, combines two forecasting methods with machine learning (artificial intelligence) to estimate local flu activity.

Because the model is new, CDC researchers said they aren't able to compare those estimates to previous flu seasons. Furthermore, this week's overall hospitalization rate is at 9.1 per 100,000, but at the same time past year the hospitalization rate was at 30.5 per 100,000.

"It is important to remember that, even if a patient gets the flu after receiving the vaccine, it is not usually as severe as if the patient had not received the vaccine at all", Durham wrote.

When the approach, called ARGONet, was applied to flu seasons from September 2014 to May 2017, it made more accurate predictions than the team's earlier high-performing forecasting approach, ARGO, in more than 75 percent of the states studied.
