After Sir Andy Murray announced he will retire from tennis this year, the public poured forward with messages of support - but not all of them found their intended recipient.

Federer begins his Australian Open title defence on Monday against Denis Istomin.

I knew that I couldn't play long rallies with him and I knew I couldn't last against him.

"I was pretty young when she first won Wimbledon, I have always looked up to her and it will be pretty cool to play her". But it was for a good cause.

"It will be a very important loss for us, for the world of tennis, for the tour, for the fans, even for the rivals that he has been part of a great rivalry between the best players for a long time, and a great competitor".

"I was disappointed and sad, a little bit shocked, to know now that we're going to lose him at some point", Federer said on the eve of the year's first Grand Slam. But we're going to lose everybody at some point. It's just now that it's definite.

Since then, Murray has been an Olympic champ for Great Britain twice, three-time victor of the Grand Slam tournament, and he was the victor of the 2016 ATP World Tour Finals - making him the world's No. 1 tennis player at the time.

"I hope you can overcome this".

The case of mistaken identity is nothing new to Murray, who has had to cope with mistaken correspondence due to his namesake's two Wimbledon victories, US Open triumph, Olympic gold medals and more. He's a good guy, Hall of Famer, legend.

"There's so many good players in this draw, I know that everyone wants to win this tournament". Anybody would substitute their career with his.

She added: 'He's such a phenomenal competitor in an era of other great players, a champion for equality in sport and a genuinely nice guy.

Five-time finalist Murray plans to start the tournament in Australia, but he has conceded it could be his last after 20 months of struggling to overcome a long-time injury.

Federer, who has dealt with his own injury concerns having been struck down by back and knee ailments prior to his renaissance in 2017, told CNN: "I hope it doesn't end with an injury".

"I think one of the biggest things is that I go into the main media room now, so that's changed. I don't have to have it that way".

Kyrgios also claims Murray, who has three Grand Slam titles, is a better player than world No 1 Novak Djokovic. I'm in a better place than I was six months ago but still in a lot of pain. I've been very fortunate. I work extremely hard in the matches as well - it just maybe doesn't come across so much. "There are many things why I look up towards her", said the Londoner, who is ranked 131 in the world. It means a lot and has made me feel much more positive than when I woke this morning.

"He challenged me time and time again and I think I played him in his absolute prime, when he was virtually unbeatable, when he was hitting sliding backhand passing shots on the line time and time again", the Swiss said.
