United Kingdom cabinet mulls no-deal Brexit readiness

UK's May to Warn Against 'Damage' of Second Brexit Vote PM under pressure as Corbyn threatens no-confidence vote | London Business News

Prime Minister Theresa May will on Monday (Dec 17) warned MPs against supporting a second Brexit referendum, as calls mounted for a public vote to break the political impasse over the deal she has struck with the EU.

May has said she'll put the terms she negotiated with Brussels to a vote in Parliament the week of January 14, by which time her advisers hope enough lawmakers will have seen the danger of a no-deal split to back it. Authorities predict massive economic damage from leaving the European Union without an agreement, including a 25 percent slump in the pound and house prices down 30 percent.

However, the party has made it clear it will not table a motion of no confidence in the Government until such a vote has been held.

Labour did not exercise their right to force a no-confidence vote in the government, leading the Conservatives to hit back, saying that Corbyn had "bottled it" it the Commons.

UK Prime Minister has until now survived one no-confidence motion against her while another motion was tabled by the Leader of the Opposition, Jeremy Corbyn, in the Commons on December 17.

"The prime minister has cynically run down the clock, trying to manoeuvre parliament into a choice between two unacceptable outcomes" - her deal or no deal, Corbyn said.

Asked whether he was tempted to give MPs a range of options to vote on, he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "I think, obviously, it's important once the Prime Minister has finished her negotiations with other European leaders and the Commission that Parliament votes on that".

Another diplomat said the United Kingdom government, which rushed out details of its own no-deal plans on Monday, was expected to reciprocate.

Corbyn said in his point of order in the Commons: "It's very clear that it's bad, unacceptable that we should be waiting nearly a month before we have a meaningful vote on the crucial issue facing the future of this country".

Scottish Labour deputy leader Lesley Laird said the Mrs May had lost control at Westminster, as well as within her own party.

A no-deal Brexit has moved a step closer to reality with the European Commission triggering EU-wide contingency plans.

The British Army has 3,500 troops "held at readiness" in the case of a no-deal Brexit, UK Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson has said.

.

"Another vote... would do irreparable damage to the integrity of our politics", May said, adding that it would also "likely leave us no further forward".

Speaking shortly after the meeting, Mrs May's official spokesman said: "Cabinet agreed that with just over three months until we exit from the European Union we have now reached the point where we need to ramp up these preparations".

There have also been reports that government officials are considering giving the public a vote.

Mr Drakeford told reporters in Downing Street that a second referendum would be "unavoidable" if MPs failed to approve a deal and there was not a general election.

"This is a constitutional crisis because this House is not being allowed to express its will on behalf of our communities, who around the country are telling us that they reject this deal - that is why MPs want to be able to vote against it".

That increases the risk of Britain leaving without a deal on March 29, a scenario some businesses fear would be catastrophic for the world's fifth largest economy.

Furthermore, unlike a No Confidence vote in the government, it will not automatically be allocated time in Parliament. But now she also wants members of Parliament to be staring over the cliff edge when they vote.
