Meanwhile, a quarter back Trump's claim that there's a crisis at the southern border and two-thirds oppose declaring a national emergency to fund a border wall, according to the poll.

But Trump has turned his single-minded push for more walls into a political crusade that opponents say is a stunt to stoke xenophobia in his right-wing voter base while willfully ignoring the border's complex realities. Joe Manchin III, D-W.Va., said in a statement Sunday that given Trump's suggestion late last week that he does not immediately plan to issue an emergency declaration, "it's time for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to bring up the House passed appropriations bills that would finally reopen government". He said the president had accepted a border security package that included money for a wall, then changed his mind.

The U.S. president threatened anew on the weekend that the government shutdown could continue indefinitely if he doesn't get border wall funding.

Trump continued to blame Democrats for the impasse.

The poll finds that 42 per cent of Democrats who oppose the wall say congressional Democrats should refuse to budge even if it extends the shutdown; 37 per cent say they should compromise with Trump.
