Environment secretary Michael Gove has launched a new "world leading plan" to tackle air pollution.

The strategy, which also looks to tackle home, farming and industrial pollutants, commits Britain to halving the number of people who live in areas breaching World Health Organization guidelines on pollution as poor air quality in British cities comes under scrutiny.

Ministers predict that the measures will cut the cost of air pollution to society by £1.7 billion every year by 2020, rising to £5.3 billion every year by 2030 - owing to savings from public health benefits.

The Clean Air Strategy also includes changes to existing smoke control laws and new powers for local authorities to act in high pollution areas, and plans to reduce ammonia emissions from farming.

A recent surge in popularity means domestic burning on stoves and open fires is now the single biggest source of particulate matter emissions.

Natural England has a team of experts poised to support farmers to take action which will help improve our environment and safeguard our precious natural habitats from the damaging effects of nitrogen pollution. But the Clean Air Strategy sets out a program of work across government, industry and society to reduce emissions coming from a wide range of sources.

Asked about government plans to improve air quality while on a visit to Chiang Mai, Prayuth said the government alone can not solve the smog problem because "everyone has contributed to" it.

A government spokesman said junta leader Prayuth Chan-ocha has ordered related agencies to inform people of the danger of ultrafine particles after Bangkok's air quality this past weekend again fell to "unhealthy" levels.

On Friday, Attorney General Geoffrey Cox gave consent for a new inquest to be opened into the death of Ella Kissi-Debrah, a nine-year-old asthma sufferer who died in 2013, after her family argued that the initial inquest ignored the role air pollution might have played in her death. "Action to protect people's health must be a requirement, not a 'nice to have"'.

"No one should have to breathe toxic air, especially not people with a lung condition or children whose lungs are still growing".

She would be the first person in Britain to have her death legally linked to air pollution as charities and pressure groups bid to raise awareness of the impact poor air quality has on health.
