In a new case study, Irish doctors report the baffling case of a 33-year-old man who injected his own semen intravenously for a year and a half, a self-developed "cure" meant to treat his chronic back pain.

A man was hospitalised after it was discovered he'd been injecting himself with his own semen for 18 months. The researchers found that he did not take any medical advice in pursuing the "cure".

The man was discharged from the hospital after medical staff removed the semen from his arm.

The patient developed a subcutaneous abscess on his right arm, where he had been injecting himself with semen on a monthly basis for 18 months.

It wasn't until he visited the doctor after his backache didn't subside (of course, the injections didn't do much) when they noticed redness and rapid swelling on his forearm, the area where he injected himself.

Presenting to the hospital with severe back pain, doctors examined him to find he had a subcutaneous abscess in his right arm from the injections.

The journal reports that this is believed to be the first reported medical case of the injection of semen for such a goal, and went on to say that even in research of "more eclectic internet sites", they could not find any cases of human injection of semen.

He had "failed multiple attempts at injecting the bodily fluid, ' she wrote, in what he called an 'innovative method to treat back pain".

The man had most recently given himself three "doses" of semen, intravenously and intramuscularly.

This case study was published with one mission in mind - to be educational and warn others against trying similar methods at home.

Dr Dunne added that the case "also demonstrates the risks involved with medical experimentation" by those who are untrained or haven't carried out proper research.

The Irish Medical Journal noted the only past examples of semen injection occurred in 1945 when human ejaculate was injected into female rats and rabbits.
