An unusual set of celestial circumstances came together on Sunday night and the wee hours of Monday morning to produce the "super blood wolf moon" for sky watchers in Europe, Africa and the Americas. It was a blood moon because the Earth's shadow completely covered the moon, giving it a reddish glow. A supermoon - it was 2019's first - is when the moon is closest to Earth in its orbit during its full phase, making it appear bigger and brighter.

The last total lunar eclipse, which occurred in July, was visible only over parts of Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

Hence the name for this year's event: a "super blood wolf Moon".

"The Sun's red light is scattered much less by air, and is bent by Earth's atmosphere in a process called refraction, travelling all the way through it to light up the Moon's surface".

Kevin-Prince Boateng set for shock Barcelona move
Boateng will be available for the first leg of Barcelona's Copa del Rey quarter-final clash against Sevilla on Wednesday night. Barca were in need of reinforcements in midfield, with the likely departure of Denis Suarez still to come.

When the full moon moved into Earth's shadow, it darkened, but did not disappear.

What is a blood moon and is it different to a total lunar eclipse?

On Sunday, 20 January 2019, we had nine telescopes at the Camino Real Marketplace Plaza to view the lunar eclipse. The moon appeared bigger than normal, with a red cast as sunlight was refracted through the Earth's atmosphere. Whenever this process of refraction happens, the moon is given the nickname "blood moon". The moniker "Wolf Moon" was given to every January moon by Native Americans. When the moon began to "bleed", the Arawak Indians were fooled into giving Columbus and his crew food.

Ireland is due to experience its most impressive lunar eclipse for the next 14 years on Monday, 21 January.
