According to Dr Hasan Hutchinson, director general of Health Canada's office of nutrition policy and promotion, "We were very clear that when we were looking at the evidence base that we were not going to be using reports that have been funded by industry as well". It touts water - not milk - as the "drink of choice" and eliminates the previous milk and alternatives food group.

In the new food guide, there is a large emphasis on higher proportions of plant-based foods.

Being the first revision in the past decade, the new food guide suggests some major changes to eating habits.

"Today's announcement of the new Food Guide recognizes that fruits and vegetables are an essential part of a healthy diet", said CPMA President Ron Lemaire. "The benefits of these diets extend to our natural environment by reducing the carbon footprint, water consumption and pollution, and greenhouse gas production associated with animal agriculture".

It was developed with input from science and health experts, and specifically excluded the input of industry to avoid past concerns about political interference. The guide recommends moving away from fruit juices and other sugary drinks (fruit juice has been struck from the "fruits and vegetable" group).

The updated food guide, released on Tuesday after years of anticipation, directs consumers to "limit highly processed foods" - warning about sodium and sugar content in such items as deli meats, frozen dinners, muffins and ice cream.

The new food safety regulations, which Canadian Food Inspection Agency says are consistent with worldwide standards, focus on prevention, along with speedy removal of unsafe food products from the marketplace.

Los Angeles teachers return to schools
To keep the schools operating, DPS plans to pull from a pool of 1,200 substitute teachers, 300 of which retired teachers. What worthless rubbish! In other words, absolutely nothing will be done to halt the privatization of public education.

"We made that very strong commitment not to be meeting with industry (and) not to be influenced by industry", Hutchinson said.

"Nutritionists and dieticians are a safe place for people to come and get a better understanding on how how their diets can change and how to make positive improvements", she says.

But by eschewing processed foods, Graydon said, the guide is jeopardizing its own credibility with the already health-conscious consumer.

Nathalie Savoie, CEO, Dietitians of Canada, said: "Dietitians are passionate about the potential of food to enhance lives and improve health".

A document released by Health Canada revealed that most Canadians don't consume enough vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.

CPMA and CPHA will continue to support the efforts of the Government of Canada to promote a healthy lifestyle by following the new Canada Food Guide and its available resources. Jill Harvie, public and stakeholder engagement manager for the Canadian Cattlemen's Association, pointed out an image of beef is included on the food guide as an example of a "protein-rich food", along with eggs, nuts and lentils. The visual guide shows a plate topped with a variety of produce, protein and whole grains, but the only dairy pictured is yogurt.

"We have a federal agency that doesn't necessarily endorse the nutritional role of dairy products as much as they used to", Sylvain Charlebois, professor in food distribution and policy at Dalhousie University said. But Health Canada does work with the provinces, and is expected to unveil a "Healthy Eating Pattern for Health Professionals and Policy Makers" this year.
