Careful travelling to Washington counties hit by measles outbreak: provincial health authority

Inslee declares state of emergency over Washington measles outbreak Measles Outbreak: What You Need To Know About Disease

Oregon health officials said the outbreak has spread to their state, as a Multnomah resident was diagnosed with measles, The Oregonian reported.

Gov. Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency today in all counties in response to more than two dozen confirmed cases of measles in our state.

Medical experts call it an outbreak boosted by lower-than-normal vaccination rates in an anti-vaccination U.S.

Twenty-one of the 30 people infected in Clark County are under 10 years old, with eight between the ages of 11 and 18 and a lone case of someone between 19 and 29, according to the county's Public Health Department.

One case also was confirmed in King County, Washington, in the Seattle area, and another in Multnomah County, Oregon.

Officials say the man had recently traveled to Vancouver, Washington, where a measles outbreak is happening, but it's not clear if that's where he was infected.

Measles is a contagious virus that spreads through the air through coughing and sneezing. For now, public health officials are focused on preventing additional exposure.

Anti-vaccination propaganda has already led to province-wide measles outbreaks in 2014 and 2010, and the BCCDC is understandably concerned about another as the disease spreads through the neighbouring states.

"It's (the vaccine's) nearly 97 or 98 percent effective if you've taken the two doses", Vaid said.

Both Washington and OR allow vaccine exemptions for personal and philosophical reasons.

Every time an unvaccinated person who has been exposed to measles goes out in public, "it starts that clock over again", Armstrong said. The measles vaccine is available as a combined measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine, and is available from your local health unit, family doctor, and many pharmacists. While it is expected that most travellers will be immune to measles, some individuals will be susceptible, including infants less than one year old or people who have never been immunized against measles.

"Some people say, 'Why would you get vaccinated for something that is no worse than a cold?'" says Leman. Symptoms such as high fever, rash all over the body, stuffy nose and red eyes typically disappear without treatment within two or three weeks. Complications from the disease, such as swelling of the brain, can be deadly.
