Temperatures aren't expected to rise above freezing again until Saturday afternoon, reaching the mid-30s. However, most of the lower Hudson Valley will change to all rain during the day as temperatures warm to around 40 degrees.

The entirety of Minnesota and Wisconsin and much of northern IL is expected to remain below zero for all of Wednesday.

For the Chicago area and parts of Minnesota, snowfall was expected to peter off on Monday.

Most state government offices in the Lower Peninsula were closed Monday morning except for offices handling critical functions. When the sun sets, the precipitation is likely to fall as snow across the region.

Cold weather advisories are in effect across a broad swath of the central US, from North Dakota to Missouri and spanning into Ohio.

Accuweather reports that the temperatures are unique, also, in that they are "prolonged", and could last from late Tuesday night through early Thursday morning: "Some locations in the Midwest will be below zero continuously for 48-72 hours".

A risky cold-air outbreak will reach the Midwest and Great Lakes on Tuesday and is expected to last multiple days with the potential to break dozens of records.

Rent Live Actor Brennin Hunt Injured During Rehearsal

Snow will begin falling in that region after midnight, with unsafe wind chills and "isolated to scattered downed trees and power lines", says the National Weather Service.

Even if the record is not broken, the National Weather Service in Chicago is calling this week's forecast "life-threatening extreme cold" that "can lead to rapid onset of frostbite and hypothermia". Wind chills will run -30 to -50 out that way by Wednesday into Thursday AM.

"That's not just unusual". Dry weather will continue Thursday with lows in the teens and highs in the mid to upper 30's.

More than 1,000 flights were cancelled at two airports in Chicago, a major regional hub and America's third largest city, in nearby IL. The high temperature forecast at O'Hare on Wednesday is negative 14 degrees, which would break a record set on January 18, 1994.

"We think that this will be the coldest time of the winter and as we move into February, it looks like the beginning of February is going to be similarly cold and then I think it'll break."

In Wisconsin's biggest city, Milwaukee, downtown streets were virtually deserted Monday and every major highway in the state covered in ice or snow, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
