Microsoft yesterday reported its earnings results for the quarter ended December 31, 2018.

The company reported revenue of $32.5 billion and net income of $8.4 billion, which are both sharp increases over the company's $28.9 billion in revenue and $7.5 billion net income from previous year.

Microsoft Corp's Azure cloud computing platform grew at a slower pace in the December quarter compared with a year earlier, sending shares of the software giant almost 3 per cent lower in after-hours trade on Wednesday.

However, the consumer side of Office was hit by a softening PC market and only manage to grow its revenue by a modest 1%.

Microsoft's cloud services, led by products like Azure and Office 365, have been growing in double digits as more businesses eliminate the costs of maintaining their own servers by moving their technical operations to the cloud.

Operating income was $10.3 billion and increased 18%.

Productivity group revenue was up 13 percent to $10.1 billion, with operating income up 20 percent to $4.0 billion.

Microsoft's total revenue climbed 12.3 per cent to US$32.47 billion. Although third-party revenue is down, the Surface range continues to grow with a 39 per cent increase in revenue from their flagship hardware.

In Microsoft's "More Personal Computing" category, which includes Windows, Surface, gaming, and search advertising revenue, the company saw revenues move up by seven percent to $13 billion. Specifically, computer makers can't get the parts to ship machines, dinging Windows sales.

Microsoft has long courted customers outside the United States and has a 17% share of the global cloud market, research firm Canalys previously said.

"Our strong commercial cloud results reflect our deep and growing partnerships with leading companies in every industry including retail, financial services, and healthcare", stated Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft.

"In Windows, the overall PC market was smaller than we expected primarily due to the timing of chip supply to our OEM partners which constrained an otherwise healthy PC ecosystem and negatively impacted both OEM Pro and Non-Pro revenue growth", Hood said in a conference call with analysts.

Cash flow also went up by 13% YoY, pushed by higher collections from customers, partially offset by higher tax and supplier payments, while the free cash flow reached $5.2 billion, experiencing a 2% YoY decrease following capital expenditures in support of Microsoft's cloud business.
