Apple also learned that Chen had recently applied for a job at a Chinese autonomous vehicle firm that directly competes with Apple's Project Titan.

The alleged secrets thief reportedly carried out his pilfering while he worked as a hardware developer last summer and was one of 5,000 Apple employees scooped up to work on Project Titan.

Chen was hired by Apple as a hardware developer engineer for its self-driving vehicle project in June 2018, but aroused suspicion after being seen taking photos.

A second Chinese national working for Apple has been accused of stealing trade secrets related to Apple's self-driving vehicle initiative, otherwise known as Project Titan. Chen was hired at Apple in 2018. An engineer called Jizhong Chen was spotted by another employee taking "wide-angled photographs" in places where he should not have been taking snapshots (likely with a Huawei Mate 20 Pro too, just to rub salt into the wound).

Apparently Apple is not the only company XMotors is trying to lift ideas from.

"Chen, according to the complaint, allowed Apple Global Security employees to search his personal computer, where they found thousands of files containing Apple's intellectual property, including manuals, schematics, and diagrams". NBC reports that investigators found about a hundred photographs taken inside an Apple building on his hard drive. Chen told Apple he was planning to travel to China to visit his ill father. He was placed on the plan in December previous year.

"Apple takes confidentiality and the protection of our IP very seriously", the company said in a statement.

The affidavit from the Federal Bureau of Investigation agent assigned to probing Chen reveals the enormous lengths Apple has gone to keep its robo-ride project secret, including a separate building that only employees on the project itself can enter.

Chen could face up to 10 years in the clink for such thievery and even be hit with a fine topping out at $250,000.
