Study finds eating breakfast may have little impact on weight loss

Previous studies have suggested that eating breakfast fires up the metabolism and can help dieters stop overeating later in the day. But the new study, led by Australian researchers, found that those who skipped breakfast consumed an average of 260 fewer calories per day.

Dr Frankie Phillips, registered dietitian for the British Dietetic Association, said: "Whilst some studies do show that people who eat breakfast tend to be a healthier weight, there is no clear benefit of starting to eat breakfast just as a tool to lose weight".

However, those findings come from observational trials and critics say there may be other important differences between people who do or do not tend to start the day with a meal.

Experts from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, examined 13 randomized controlled trials related to breakfast and weight in high income countries, including the United Kingdom.

The results of the study showed that those who skipped breakfast were on average 0.44 kg lighter.

Past studies have found a protein-based morning meal, or a bowl full of oats first thing, could be the key to maintaining a steady weight and controlling your appetite later in the day.

A blow out breakfast, "average" lunch and small dinner may be the best combination for those suffering from diabetes or obesity, research suggested in March 2018. They're saying that if you make healthy lifestyle and food choices - then eating breakfast won't have a detrimental effect on your weight. "We are told that breakfast helps our metabolism and that skipping it will make us much hungrier so we'll overeat".

'Caution is needed when recommending breakfast for weight loss in adults, as it could have the opposite effect.

"Breakfast has the potential to be one of the easiest times of the day to eat a balanced meal, and to meet a number of nutrition targets".

'Further high-quality randomised controlled trials are needed to substantiate whether those individuals seeking to lose weight should skip or consume breakfast and the role of breakfast eating in an overall weight management approach.

The researchers said that because of the varying quality of the studies included, the findings should be interpreted with caution.

Prof Cicuttini wants breakfast lovers to know that the study's authors are not anti-breakfast. Five trials included overweight participants, the remaining had people with any range of body weight.

"If a person likes to eat breakfast, that is fine... there is no reason to change", she said.

However, they added that "currently, the available evidence does not support modifying diets in adults to include the consumption of breakfast as a good strategy to lose weight". "Interestingly we found this to be the case regardless of established breakfast habit".

While several studies have linked lower body weight to frequent breakfast consumption, King's College London professor Tim Spector noted such research is "flawed by bias". Furthermore, despite common belief, skipping breakfast was not linked to people feeling hungrier in the afternoon.

He added: 'No 'one size fits all, ' and prescriptive slow moving diet guidelines filled with erroneous information look increasingly counterproductive and detract from important health messages.
