Children Aren't Brushing Their Teeth Enough — CDC

US kids use excess toothpaste Report Study: Many small kids in the U.S. are using too much toothpaste

Young kids may push for independence in brushing their teeth, but kids' toothpaste tastes sweet, according to the team."You don't want them eating it like food". Nearly 40 percent of children ages 3-6 use more toothpaste than the amount recommended by dental professionals.

Many parents of young children are brushing their kids' teeth with so much toothpaste, it's unhealthy, according to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

The government health agency found that many young kids are using too much toothpaste than they should be.

The recommended toothpaste amount for youngsters at three to six years of age is of pea-estimate, and for those under three about a rice grain, as per the report.

A pea-sized amount is recommended to prevent kids from accidentally swallowing too much toothpaste. However brushing with toothpaste is recommended by the ADA and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, as soon as the baby starts teething, at around 6 months.

"What's really happening is that parents are following the rules of brushing twice a day, but they might not always be there", paediatric dentist Alene Marie D'Alesio from the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, who wasn't involved in the study, told The New York Times.

Brushing with too much toothpaste can damage enamel, since children could swallow too much fluoride while their teeth are developing, the CDC says.

But too much fluoride when teeth are forming can lead to tooth streaking or spottiness - known as dental fluorosis.

The new report looked at the brushing and toothpaste use of around 5,157 children between 2013 and 2016.

The CDC also found that almost 80 percent of 3 to 15-year-olds started brushing their teeth later than advised, which is when the first tooth grows out.

Limitations of this survey were that parents self reported the brushing habits of their kids and were not observed first hand. Additionally, participants were not asked to specify whether the toothpaste had fluoride.

Although CDC urged that starting 2, people should brush for two times a day with fluoride toothpaste, they cautioned that the amount is highly important.
