Two Highly Contagious Cases of Measles Reported in CT

At least 47 people in southwest Washington's Clark County have been infected with measles during the past couple of weeks, according to data posted on the Clark County Public Health website on February 3. The reason, according to an article in the Hartford Courant, is that the majority of Connecticut's population has been vaccinated. In just Washington state, there have been more than 45 confirmed cases of measles this year alone.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention attributes the rise in measles to un-vaccinated travelers who get exposed and bring it to the United States and to those who chose not to get vaccinated.

Maldonado said what is happening now is people are getting looser with getting vaccinations for their children.

Some parents refuse to have their children vaccinated due to religious or philosophical reasons or they might have heard from others about someone who became violently ill after being vaccinated.

The measles outbreak in Clark County shows no sign of letting up as public health officials Sunday announced they had identified additional cases. The best protection against measles is the vaccine. All 50 states and the District of Columbia have laws that require children entering child care or public schools to have certain vaccinations against communicable diseases.

Two other outbreaks have also been reported this year, the CDC said, in New York state and New York City.

HMV has been rescued from administration
Chichester's HMV store has locked its doors today (Tuesday 5) as the company went into administration. . Those stores were rebranded as Sunrise Records, a chain of now 80 stores in North America.

In Clark County, the confirmed cases include two infected residents who moved to Georgia, as well as two children who had traveled to Hawaii, where they were quarantined and did not spread measles to others. Doctors say one dose of the MMR [measles, mumps, rubela] vaccine is about 93 percent effective.

De Guzman expressed concerns over the "alarming" number of measles cases, noting that patients now have to share beds for the hospital to accommodate all of them.

"Vaccine-preventable diseases can range from mild to severe and even life-threatening", he said. As many as 1 out of every 20 children with measles will get pneumonia, which can also be deadly, the agency reports.

"San Lazaro still accepts measles cases.we can not turn down every Filipino who asks help from us", she said.

There is another possible complication that can occur seven to 10 years after infection, more commonly when people get the infection as infants. The outbreak in Clark County has been concentrated mostly among unvaccinated children.

The CDC recommends children get the vaccine, starting with the first dose at age 12 to 15 months, and the second dose at 4 to 6 years of age.
