Obesity-fueled cancers on the rise in millennials

'Shocking' rise in obesity-related cancers among young adults Cancer rates rising in the young obese | News

An analysis released Monday by the American Cancer Society (ACS) reveals that obesity-linked cancers are on the increase among young adults in the USA, a trend which could stifle the progress made in reducing cancer mortality over the last few decades.

"The fact that increases were mostly in obesity-related cancers is due to the obesity epidemic, and we would expect that the incidence would increase as this younger population ages", said lead researcher Dr. Ahmedin Jemal. Those cancers are colorectal, endometrial, gallbladder, kidney, pancreatic, and multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells-cancers that typically show up in patients in their 60s or 70s.

Chris Macdonald, Head of Research at Pancreatic Cancer UK said: "The study reveals some striking findings and offers a compelling theory that the recent increase in obesity in the population drives the disproportionate increase in risk of pancreatic cancer in young adults". However, the study found a 4.34 percent average annual increase in pancreatic cancer diagnoses among people between the ages of 25 and 29 during the study period.

The obesity epidemic is driving a surge in the number of young people diagnosed with obesity-related cancers that threatens to reverse decades of progress in lowering cancer deaths, according to a new study. Research in the United Kingdom shows at least seven in 10 people born between the early 1980s and mid-1990s will likely be overweight or obese by their mid-30s and 40s.

That upward trajectory has experts concerned about associated medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and up to 13 types of cancer.

Excess body fat is known to increase the risk of certain cancers.

"Although the absolute risk of these cancers is small in younger adults, these findings have important public health implications", said Ahmedin Jemal, DVM Ph.D., scientific vice president of surveillance & health services research and senior/corresponding author of the paper. They also release hormone-like fatty acids and proteins that affect metabolism, body weight and reproductive functions.

Obesity is one of the most preventable causes of cancer.

Regardless of how it happens, science knows the association is real. Especially striking was the rising rate of kidney cancers.

Berger said, If you are obese, you are at a higher risk of cancer.

One in 20 cases of cancer in the United Kingdom are linked to excess weight.

Professor Sanchia Aranda, CEO Cancer Council Australia said, "With more than two thirds of adults considered overweight or obese, and almost half insufficiently active, these results show we have the potential to prevent a significant number of cancers in Australia and potentially save thousands of lives".

With this analysis, the researchers hope that it becomes a wake up call for parents, doctors, policy makers and the public, with respect to childhood obesity. "We need the political will", Platz said. "They'll grow out of it.' Because what's happening is the little kid's obesity may already be affecting the carcinogenic process". Obesity is among the most impactful of these.
