Nissan's plant in Sunderland is the biggest auto factory in the UK.

The offer was made by business secretary Greg Clark to the Japanese car-maker in 2016 in a well-guarded letter that was finally released on Monday, in an attempt to secure a major investment from the company.

Merkel said questions about the backstop could be discussed in the so-called political agreement that accompanies the Brexit deal, adding: "We need to show creativity, we need to listen to each other". The current government framework agreement envisages leaving the Single Market and the Customs Union., Nissan's former CEO Carlos Ghosn hinted that he would seek compensation if vehicle exports to Europe were subject to tariffs.

A £60m support package for Nissan's Sunderland plant "still stands" despite a decision not to build its latest SUV in the United Kingdom, a government minster said.

"They will be invited to re-submit an application in the light of the changed investments that they are making".

"Its role in providing high skilled well paid jobs, innovative R&D and investment is why we are determined to build on these strengths to make the United Kingdom a leader in the next generation of autonomous and electric vehicles through the Automotive Sector Deal, as part of our modern Industrial Strategy".

However, earlier this week it confirmed a decision to move production to Japan.

BRITISH Prime Minister Theresa May said on Sunday she would be "armed with a fresh mandate and new ideas" when she next meets European Union negotiators over her Brexit deal.

Clark said the government would "vigorously pursue continued access to the European market as an objective in future negotiations", adding that: "In any circumstances, the government will ensure that the United Kingdom continues to be one of the most competitive locations for automotive and other advanced manufacturing, within Europe and globally, including sites such as Sunderland which are key to the economy of the North East of England".

Following the announcement, Clark said it would be "a blow to the (country's automotive) sector and the region".

"It was shortly after his demise I said. that we may see a re-evaluation of some of those investment decisions, that is exactly what we've seen".

The company said planned investment in the next-generation Juke and Qashqai, also announced in 2016, was unaffected. "As long as we have a current commitment to safeguard the current competitiveness we will be fine".

European Union leaders have so far refused, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel repeated this on Monday, saying the Brexit agreement had been painstakingly negotiated and reopening it "is not on the agenda".
