Eschewing the MAU number suggests that Twitter-like Apple (AAPL) before it, when it chose to stop reporting iPhone quarterly unit sales-doesn't like the trajectory of the metric.

Twitter also expects capital expenditure of between $550 million and $600 million in 2019, well above analysts' average estimate of $415 million.

Expected total revenue for the first quarter of 2019 is between $715 million and $775 million for the first quarter of 2019. Analysts, on average, projected $766.1 million, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Twitter shares tanked almost 10 percent Thursday after the company warned of weaker-than-expected revenue and said it will stop reporting its closely watched monthly active user metrics.

"The dip in MAUs also shouldn't be a surprise as Twitter publicly announced in mid-2018 that it was making more-aggressive efforts-though the work is far from done-to clean up the bots and fake users on its social network", Forrester analyst Jessica Liu wrote in an email to Barron's.

The social media company reported 321 million monthly active users in the fourth quarter, a decrease of 9 million year-on-year and 5 million lower than the previous quarter. And Twitter's numbers trail far behind that of Facebook, which reported 1.52 billion daily users in for the fourth quarter of 2018 despite having a shitshow of a year.

Twitter's operating costs are expected to surge by 20 percent year on year, a large increase from analysts projections of 12 percent.

Frank Robinson (1935-2019), trailblazing Major League Baseball manager and Hall of Fame player
Robinson led the Orioles to their first championship that October. " Frank Robinson and I were more than baseball buddies". But by 1965, despite hitting 33 home runs and driving in 113 runs, Red's management considered him old and expendable.

"As a platform for breaking news and live moments, many users are logging in on a daily basis, and Twitter is acknowledging this pattern by sharing metrics with ad buyers that will allow them to see the bigger picture as it relates to users who are reachable by ads".

Overall revenue in the fourth quarter rose to $909 million, handily beating analysts' estimate of $868.2 million.

Total advertising revenue rose 23 percent to $791 million.

Shares traded around $32.05, down 6.2 percent Thursday morning. $791 million of that figure comes from advertising revenue, split $425 million in the USA compared to $366 internationally - while data licensing making up the other $117 million.

Reuters reports that following the recent release of Twitter's daily active users for the first time, the company's stock price has taken a hit.

Twitter shares sputtered and then fell sharply after the report, dropping as much as eight per cent in pre-market trade.
