Was the 4th Hottest Year on Record. Here's How NASA Knows

Earth just experienced one of the warmest years on record 2018 Fourth Hottest Year On Record, Says NASA
Frank Williams | 08 February, 2019, 18:13

On Wednesday it incorporated the final weeks of a year ago into its climate models and concluded that average global surface temperature in 2018 was 1 degree Celsius (1.8 Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial baseline levels.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) each published global climate results that name 2018 as the fourth warmest year the Earth has endured in at least 139 years.

"The 20 warmest years on record have been in the past 22 years".

This story is developing.

While last year was the fourth-warmest year on record, British meteorologists are predicting the next five years would be much hotter, maybe even record-breaking.

Weather dynamics mean warming affects regions in different ways.

NASA announced today that 2018 was officially the 4th warmest year since the 1880s, with the fastest increase in warming found in the Arctic.

Measles outbreak: 50 confirmed cases
The Northwest cases are among three ongoing measles outbreaks in the US that sickened 79 people in January, according to the CDC. Measles is often brought into the United States by unvaccinated people who become infected in other countries, says the CDC.

The WMO said sharp temperatures also contributed to a number of extreme weather events such as hurricanes, droughts and flash flooding over various regions of the world.

Continuing, Taalas said: "Temperatures are only part of the story".

The United Kingdom Met Office, the U.K.'s weather service, said global temperatures over the next five years will average somewhere between 58.51 and 59.49 degrees Fahrenheit, or 14.73 to 15.27 Celsius. NASA adds that the melting of Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets contributed to a rise in sea level.

2018, it turns out, broke quite a few records, none of them good.

Moreover, 2015 was the first year when global annual average surface temperatures reached 1C above pre-industrial levels, and the following three years have all remained close to this level. Meanwhile, record levels of man-made greenhouse gas emissions, mainly from burning fossil fuels, trap ever more heat.

"2018 is yet again an extremely warm year on top of a long-term global warming trend", according to NASA's Gavin Schmidt, the director of the agency's Goddard Institute of Space Studies.

NASA clarified that it gathers its measurements from "6,300 weather stations, ship- and buoy-based observations of sea surface temperatures, and temperature measurements from Antarctic research stations".
