Amazon may be rethinking plans for New York City headquarters

Unlike in Virginia and Tennessee, where legislators emphatically approved and incentivized the building of Amazon HQ with millions of dollars in project investments, a group of NY legislators and unions are banding together in disapproval.

The Post report came days after Democrats nominated State Senator Michael Gianaris, a vocal critic of the Amazon project, to the Public Authorities Control Board, which must unanimously approve the Amazon plan.

It is unclear if Amazon truly is considering pulling its HQ2 project out of New York City - as was reported Friday morning by the Washington Post - but this much is clear: Officials from New Jersey have been courting the company for some time, selling Newark as a viable and cost-effective alternative.

New York - Long Island City, specifically - was selected as a co-winner, along with land in Northern Virginia, in November. A smaller project in Nashville, Tennessee, is expected to create 5,000 new jobs.

"For the State Senate to oppose Amazon was governmental malpractice".

Any major multinational would have multiple reasons to expand in New York City, given its highly skilled workforce and status as a hub for the technology, entertainment and advertising industries-all areas where Amazon is expanding.

Amazon executives have had internal discussions recently to reassess the situation in NY and explore alternatives, the Post reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

Mayor Bill DeBlasio, who helped craft the HQ2 deal behind closed doors, expressed confidence that Amazon would still come to the city. "Whether it's building a pipeline of local jobs through work force training or funding computer science classes for thousands of New York City students, we are working hard to demonstrate what kind of neighbor we will be", company spokeswoman Jodi Seth told The Post when asked if the New York deal was at risk of failing. Multiple parties reached out to Amazon to make sure that they know Chicago would still want them.

The two have been at the forefront of the Amazon opposition, and most recently, Sen. Local union leaders have repeatedly claimed the online retail giant is "anti-worker" and "anti-union" and called conditions in Amazon factories around the county "deplorable".

Amazon can see its grasp on $2.808 billion in subsidies slipping away.

Meanwhile, NY Governor Andrew Cuomo defended the deal Friday.

But, the source said, "There are some folks making it clear (in New York) that Amazon will never come to NY".

"The mayor fully expects Amazon to deliver on its promise to New Yorkers", said his spokesman Eric Phillips in a statement.

It can also apply for other tax incentives, such as New York City's Relocation and Employment Assistance Program that offers tax breaks potentially worth $900 million over 12 years. The company is hiring lobbyists and a "community affairs manager" in NY, so it's clearly still committed to the deal at some level.
