Miller-Heidke won both the popular vote and the received the best score from the judges, beating out the likes of Aussie band Sheppard, drag queen Courtney Act, and The Voice Australia 2016 victor Alfie Arcuri.

Miller-Heidke topped Saturday's scoreboard, narrowly beating electronic group Electric Fields.

Her winning song, 'Zero Gravity, ' is about post-natal depression.

Miller-Heidke's performance was defined by an absolute belter of an operatic note, but her dramatic aerial staging - which saw a swaying dancer hoisted metres off the ground - may have helped, too.

Most notably, Kate has beaten Courtney Act to Eurovision glory, after the Celebrity Big Brother victor and RuPaul's Drag Race royalty entered the national selection with her song Fight For Love.

The singer told the BBC he "100 percent" believed that his song, "Bigger Than Us", could carry Britain to glory on May 18.

PSG are already missing Neymar for the tie against a resurgent United, with the Brazilian not expected back from a metatarsal injury until early April.

Miller-Heidke is likely to come under increased scrutiny, as activists have been calling for artists and broadcasters to boycott the event so long as the final is hosted in Israel.

In 2018, Israeli singer Netta Barzilai won the contest, helping to bring the competition to her country this year.

She said she is still in disbelief at being chosen to represent Australia at the global song contest in Tel Aviv in May.

But activists for the Palestinian-led global Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement have been calling on musicians and broadcasters to refuse to participate in this year's song contest as part of a broader campaign against Israel's occupation of Palestine.

The calls follow protests outside SBS's headquarters and petitions to broadcasters and artists both in Australia and internationally.

While thousands of fans filled the Gold Coast Convention and Entertainment Centre, the event was not universally supported.
