Following the firing of Peter Chiarelli on Wednesday, the team announced Keith Gretzky has been elevated to interim general manager.

In April 2018, Chiarelli received a vote of confidence from Oilers CEO Bob Nicholson at a postseason news conference following Edmonton's 12th-place finish in the Western Conference.

The shakeup comes hours after the club stumbled into the All-Star break with a third consecutive defeat on home ice.

The Oilers fired head coach Todd McLellan in November and replaced him with Ken Hitchcock.

There were "Fire Chiarelli" chants in the middle of the second period and again at the end of the 3-2 loss to 31st place Detroit Red Wings Tuesday and Chiarelli was sacked just prior to midnight with the Oilers record having dropped to 23-24-3 with sudden separation from the teams they were battling in the Great Race to Save Face in the Western Conference.

Chiarelli exits after three plus-seasons with Edmonton.

Chiarelli, of course, is responsible for the trade that sent Taylor Hall to the Devils for Adam Larsson in 2016. "I think they can be better", Chiarelli said when Hitchcock was hired. We're going to try and bolster the offence and the defence, but we're not trading away our first pick.

He also believes that this game's success could lead to greater interest in the coming release of the " Titanfall " sequel. After EA and Respawn Entertainment surprise launched Apex Legends this week, it caught the industry by storm.

Nicholson stressed that the firing does not signal the season is lost, that the team is launching a full-scale rebuild, or that the Oilers will pull the trigger on a panic trade for short-term benefit.

If somebody in the organization figured that signing Mikko Koskinen to a $13.5 million USA three-year extension Monday would stop the latest skid or change the conversation, it didn't happen. Peter Chiarelli was the president and GM of this hockey team. Hall won the Hart Trophy with the Devils past year.

The spotlight has shined extra bright on the Oilers this week, after they put Ryan Spooner (the only thing they have left to show for Jordan Eberle) on waivers on Monday and gave a generous contract extension to goaltender Mikko Koskinen on Tuesday.

He also signed Milan Lucic to a seven-year, $42 million deal at the age of 28.

Chiarelli was frequently criticized for not fielding enough talent around McDavid.

"We're not going to trade our first-round pick and any of our assets away for a quick fix", Nicholson said.

Under Chiarelli's leadership, the Oilers were 137-133-25.

Chiarelli had the brilliant idea of signing Drake Caggiula out of North Dakota.
