Other countries should follow Turkey's lead in calling out China's mistreatment of Uighur Muslims, said the head of a major human rights group on Sunday.

China Radio International's Turkish language service released a 26-second video online late Sunday, showing a man said to be Abdurehim Heyit stating that he was in "good health".

A Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman said the musician was "very healthy".

China hit out against Turkey on Monday, saying its statement was "vile", and said mention of Mr Heyit dying in custody was an "absurd lie".

"Turkey's Foreign Ministry calls on China to respect fundamental human rights of Uighur Turks and shut down concentration camps", the MFA further noted.

"I'm in the process of being investigated for allegedly violating the national laws", he added, in what appeared to be the Uighur language.

Up to 1 million people, or about 7 percent of the Muslim population in Xinjiang, have been incarcerated in an expanding network of "political re-education" camps, according to US officials and United Nations experts.

Though Muslim majority countries have so far refused to voice their concerns over the treatment of their co-religionists, Turkey's public reprimand of Beijing has been met with criticism.

In a statement released on Saturday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hami Aksoy said: "It is no longer a secret that more than one million Uighur Turks, who are exposed to arbitrary arrests, are subjected to torture and political brainwashing in concentration centres and prisons".

Turkey has called on China to close detention camps holding ethnic Uighurs following the reported death of a renowned musician from the minority.

At the start of the video, Heyit states his name and gives the date as February 10, 2019.

China says it protects the religion and culture of its ethnic minorities and that security measures in Xinjiang are needed to counter groups that incite violence there. Turkey depends on Chinese financing for major infrastructure projects, while China sees Turkey as an important link in its gargantuan Belt and Road project to expand its economic reach overseas.

Global rights groups say China routinely coerces detainees into making videotaped confessions which are then broadcast through state media to serve the government's propaganda objectives.

After months of denying their existence, Chinese authorities under increasing outside pressure acknowledged the system of camps, terming them vocational training centers.

"We hope the Turkish side will have a correct understanding of the efforts made by China to legally deploy measures to effectively fight terrorism and extremism, withdraw its false accusations and take measures to eliminate their harmful effects".
