"We can not sit idly by and presume that our leadership is guaranteed", according to a statement released by White House on Monday.

While there was no specific funding announced for the initiative, an administration official did reveal that it called for improved reporting and tracking of funds spent on AI research and development.

USA president Donald Trump wants his country to spend more on artificial intelligence (AI) technology research.

"Continued American leadership in Artificial Intelligence is of paramount importance to maintaining the economic and national security of the United States", Trump said.

Redirect funding: The order will direct federal funding agencies to prioritize investments in artificial intelligence.

It will also aim for a "multi-pronged approach" that emphasizes "research and development, AI infrastructure, AI governance, workforce and worldwide engagement".

The Hill noted that other USA agencies, such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), were rushing to invest in AI that will "improve predictions of hurricanes and severe storms", according to an agency statement obtained by the publication.

Without naming China explicitly, Trump's order does state that the U.S. "must promote an worldwide environment that supports American AI research and innovation and opens markets for American AI industries, while protecting our technological advantage in AI and protecting our critical AI technologies from acquisition by strategic competitors and adversarial nations".

The initiative is the first step taken by the U.S. government to outline some sort of guidelines to help shape its ambitions in machine learning. It bases these conclusions on the amount of patents each country has, among other things, and IBM is the biggest company with nearly 9,000 patents. "Companies like Google are also expanding their operations in countries like China, France and Canada, as the A.I. talent in those countries continues to expand". Lastly, the US will foster global collaboration for AI.

The order is short on details but directs federal agencies to make government data and computing resources more available to artificial intelligence researchers.
