In addition, owners can get a free rental auto for the day of the recall fix, or longer if a replacement part is temporarily unavailable, Honda says.

CBS News is reporting that Honda is recalling 1.2 million older models in the United States, Canada and Central America because of a faulty Takata driver's side air bag inflators.

The vehicles involved in the recall were previously repaired using specific Takata desiccated replacement inflators (PSDI-5D) or entire replacement airbag modules containing these inflators.

So far, 23 people have been killed because of this malfunction. The ammonium nitrate can become unstable over time, particularly when exposed to high temperatures and humidity, leading to inflators that explode with an unexpectedly violent force.

Transport Canada also said vehicles that were part of the latest recall include those that were under previous recalls and others that had air bags replaced after collisions.

But Honda and the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that a crash on January 19, 2018 involving a 2004 Honda Odyssey initiated an investigation and Tuesday's recall when investigators discovered that the driver's air bag inflator ruptured.

ReutersA recalled Takata airbag inflator is shown after it was removed at the AutoNation Honda dealership service department in Miami, Florida June 25, 2015.

The federal agency says the company will notify owners by mail.

This set of recalls is part of the largest series of automotive recalls in USA history, which includes as many as 70 million vehicles recalled. Honda and Acura dealers will make the repairs free, NHTSA said.

Affected vehicles include model year 2001 to 2005 Honda Civics; 2002 to 2004 Odyssey minivans; 2002 to 2006 CR-Vs; 2003 to 2008 Honda Pilot SUVs; 2003 to 2010 Honda Element SUVs; 2006 Honda Ridgelines; and 2007 to 2011 Accords. About 100 million inflators are to be recalled worldwide.
