Firebomb on Temple Mount sparks unrest as Israeli police close entrances to site Israeli Police Scuffles with Muslims at Jerusalem's al-Aqsa Compound

Israeli military police have placed the Al-Aqsa compound on lockdown and violently confronted Palestinian worshippers after an incendiary device set fire to a police position in the holy site, local media reported on Tuesday.

Jerusalem Police chief Doron Yadid ordered the Temple Mount compound reopened to Muslim worshipers on Wednesday morning after the holy site was shuttered Tuesday following a firebomb attack on a police post. Two Palestinian minors were arrested and police were seen shoving and wrestling several people to the ground.

The incident further heightened tensions at the site, which is revered by Jews as the Temple Mount and by Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary.

A Border Police officer blocks Grand Mufti Muhammad Ahmad Hussein (R) from entering the Temple Mount compound in the Old City of Jerusalem on March 12, 2019, after it was closed when a firebomb was thrown at police officers. "All doors are closed and no one is allowed in", he said.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas responded that there would be "grave repercussions" for what he called a "dangerous Israeli escalation" of violence.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu lashed out at Israel over the incident, saying it was time to end the country's "recklessness".

Grief has engulfed the world as victims, mostly humanitarian workers, ambassador, and global experts, came from more than 35 countries.

"We can not accept such reckless attacks on holy sites and the whole world needs to react against it", the Turkish state-run Anadolu Agency quoted Cavusoglu as saying.

The clashes came amid a dispute between Israel and Muslim worshipers over the status of the Bab al-Rahma ("Gate of Mercy") structure within the Al-Aqsa mosque complex, which was closed off by Israel in 2003 over alleged ties between the Islamic society operating there and the Gaza-based terrorist group Hamas.

"Restraint must be show to avoid inflaming an already tense situation", UN Middle East envoy Nikolay Mladenov tweeted, expressing concern over the escalating situation.

The longstanding closure of the site has ignited tensions between Palestinian worshipers and Israeli police in recent weeks.

The Palestinian Authority warned there will be violence if Israel "tampers" with the holy site.

Mustafa Barghouthi, leader of the Palestinian National Initiative movement, also condemned the Israeli attacks on the Palestinian worshippers. Nineteen people were arrested after the incident as violent clashes erupted between Muslim worshipers and Israeli forces as they evacuated the holy site to conduct searches.
