A shooting at a school near Sao Paulo on Wednesday left several people dead, police sources said, with initial reports putting the death toll as high as eight.

Military police Colonel Marcelo Sales said the two attackers "shot at the owner of a gas station", who is now receiving hospital treatment, before entering the school.

São Paulo police said two young men wearing masks entered the Raul Brasil elementary school at 9.30 am local time and fired guns while the children were on their snack break. The pair eventually shot and killed themselves.

Globo said there was no information immediately available about the shooters' connection to the school or a reason for the attack.

He said it was not yet known whether the assailants were former pupils at the school.

Two former students opened fire at a Brazilian school on Wednesday and killed at least five teenagers as well as two school officials before committing suicide in an attack that police said was inspired by the 1999 Columbine massacre in the United States.

Ten people, including the gunmen, were killed in total, Sao Paulo police said.

Security cameras from homes near the school showed children climbing and jumping over a white wall that surrounds the Raul Brasil building, and sprinting down streets, screaming for help.

School shootings are rare in Brazil, even though the country is one of the world's most violent, with more annual homicides than any other.

Brazil's new President Jair Bolsonaro recently announced gun ownership controls would be loosened.

Students gathered outside the school recounted harrowing attacks and seeing several bodies lying in pools of blood.

The governor of Sao Paulo said the dead included 2 teachers.

"It's a very sad scene, the saddest thing I've seen in my entire life".
