Android Q is officially available for Pixel devices starting today, and while we're busy flashing it and preparing to deliver all of the stuff you need to know about, we'd like to take this time to outline specifically what Google mentions in its own release notes. The Android Q Beta 1 is oriented towards developers only for now.

Android Q Beta 1 showcases Google's new security and privacy protection features and permissions, protecting users' information from location to filesystem and more.

Users who want are willing to deal with bugs and issues - of which there will be plenty - can enroll in the Android Beta for Pixel devices program here. As part of its work in Project Strobe, Google is adding a number of new privacy and security features to Android Q. These include more control over when apps can get your location information, more control over apps' ability to access private data like photos and videos, and a new blocker on apps launching foreground activities from a background task (which often interrupts what you're now doing in another app). So if you are using a ride share app you can let it track your location while it's in use, but forbid the app from learning your location data when not.

In Android Q apps can request a Dynamic Depth image, making it possible for third party apps to offer specialized blurs and bokeh options. "For Downloads, apps must use the system file picker, which allows the user to decide which Download files the app can access".

Google is giving developers the ability to incorporate a system settings panel right within their app, allowing you to do things like turn on wi-fi or airplane mode without ever leaving your browser. This data can also be used to create 3D images or support AR photography use cases.

We've also changed how the resizeableActivity manifest attribute works, to help you manage how your app is displayed on foldable and large screens.

Are you going to load the Android Q beta on a Pixel phone? With the new OS, developers can publish share targets that launch a specific activity in their apps with content attached.

"Sharing Shortcuts" in Android Q also makes it easier to share content like a photo withs someone in another app.

Android Q is a beta and as such, it's likely buggy. At the other end of the scale, there's a Wi-Fi performance mode to increase speed and lower latency at the expense of battery life.

Android Q provides more support for passive authentication like face ID.
