What Is a Bomb Cyclone: All About the Winter Weather Storm Hitting This Week Bomb cyclone looks like a beast from space

Known as the bomb cyclone, the storm starting Wednesday is expected to create hurricane-strength winds, blizzards, and flooding across parts of the central U.S. The rare weather system-the Conversation has a helpful explainer-arrives Wednesday and could bring with it blizzards, tornadoes, and floods.

Blizzard conditions are expected in much of Colorado and parts of Wyoming, Nebraska and South Dakota on Wednesday, the National Weather Service predicted.

The National Weather Service reported that Denver International Airport saw wind gusts of up to 75 miles per hour and heavy snow, comparing the winds to a category 1 hurricane. To qualify as a "bomb cyclone", an area of low pressure must drop at least 24 millibars in 24 hours or less.

"The heavy snow and visibility near zero will create extremely unsafe travel conditions, and power outages are also possible", according to the National Weather Service.

'While not a tropical system, winds will rival what's seen in a Category 1 hurricane, ' said weathermodels.com meteorologist Ryan Maue.

More than six inches of heavy, wet snow is expected in Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska and the Dakotas.

By Thursday, the storm system will weaken as it moves over the Tennessee River Valley, bringing mostly rain from MI southward to the Gulf Coast and some remaining snow only in the far northern parts of the country, he added.

"Very high winds will also affect large portions of the Southern to Central High Plains where high wind warnings have been issued by the National Weather Service offices across these areas", the NWS' Weather Prediction Center wrote.

A large swath of the US was under a variety of warnings, advisories, and warnings.

Hundreds of flights bound for, or departing from, the Denver airport were canceled. Most of the canceled flights have been at Denver International Airport in Colorado.

Schools across Colorado canceled classes ahead of the storm while Denver Public School District officials were considering closing school early on Wednesday, local media reported.

Travel will be unsafe, if not impossible, at times, across areas where the blizzard warning has been issued.

The NWS warned residents about safety, saying, "the heavy snow and visibility near zero will create extremely risky travel conditions, and power outages are also possible".

The storm could also cause flooding, as rain falls on accumulated snow and rivers clogged with ice begin to rise.
