Ironically, Facebook had to take to Twitter to announce that they are "aware that some people are now having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps".

Euronews has reached out to Facebook for comment but did not receive a reply at the time of publication.

Various websites that track Gmail problems and outages, showed a spike in users reporting problems with the email service from about 2am United Kingdom time.

It's not yet clear is the issue is fully resolved, however many people are saying their Facebook is back working this morning.

BBC Silicon Valley correspondent Dave Lee said the length and severity of the outage is unprecedented.

"We know this is frustrating, and our team is hard at work to resolve this ASAP", wrote Instagram.

The Facebook outage has smashed the previous record in both length and severity.

With Brexit deal down, United Kingdom lawmakers have 2 more choices
Sterling rose on news of the deal but then gave up its gains by mid-morning and was trading $1.3163 at 1040 GMT. "Let's be crystal clear about the choice: it is this deal or Brexit might not happen at all", he said.

Users across the internet are reporting that the social media site, Facebook, is down in various ways Wednesday afternoon, especially those using it on desktop. Many people went on Twitter to vent their frustration.

Even rapper Soulja Boy joined the conversation tweeting, "Wtf is wrong with Instagram s- not working oh well time to make my own app".

A Facebook spokesman confirmed the partial outage, but did not provide an update.

As far as we're aware, Google is back to normal by now, and Facebook is still working to right its servers and connectivity.

A dedicated denial of service attack, or DDoS attack, is when someone floods a website with fake traffic causing the site's performance to suffer when there are not enough resources for real traffic.

In response to the issues, a number of Facebook Messenger users have taken to Twitter to express their disappointment at the problem.

The service seems to be recovered in some places now according to users' reports, while others remain unable to log in. We are now being told that this BGP Routing issues was not related to the outage.
