Tragically, all 157 people on board Ethiopian Airlines flight 302 were killed on Sunday.

The plane was on a regularly scheduled flight from Addis Ababa to Nairobi when it took a nose dive near Bishoftu, a town about 37 miles southeast of Addis Ababa.

"My thoughts are with the families and friends of these distinguished Nigerians and the other passengers and crew who lost their lives", Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari said in a statement.

Ethiopia declared a national day of mourning for Monday amid a global stream of condolences for loved ones, many of whom gathered in tears at Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Some learned of the crash from journalists.

Kenyan officials did not arrive at the airport until 1:30, five hours after the plane went down.

In Washington, Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao said passenger safety was the first priority for the administration.

"The pilot mentioned that he had difficulties and that he wanted to return".

He was given clearance to turn back, according to Mr. GebreMariam, citing the Air Traffic Controllers record.

The aircraft had shattered into many pieces and was severely burnt.

The plane was a Boeing 737-800 MAX, the airline said.

The two incidents are similar, but it is not yet clear if Sunday's crash was caused by the same malfunction.

Swedish flight-tracking website flightradar24 said that the Boeing 737 passenger jet "had unstable vertical speed".

A previous photo caption incorrectly identified the aircraft in the photo as an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8, the same model of the airplane in Monday's crash. A final report is due later this year. "Ethiopian Airlines staff will be sent to the accident scene and will do everything possible to assist the emergency services". It plans to send a technical team to the crash site to help investigators and issued a statement saying it was "deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the passengers and crew" on the jetliner.

Representatives of Boeing and Cincinnati-based engine-maker CFM International, a joint venture between General Electric and General Electric Co and France's Safran SA, were expected to advise the NTSB. It also was a serious blow to Ethiopian Airlines, which has expanded to become the continent's largest and best-managed carrier and turned Addis Ababa into the gateway to Africa. It said previously that it expected to carry 10.6 million passengers a year ago. Here is the latest list of nationalities as released by the airline.

The last crash by the airline was in 2010 when one of the company's aeroplanes crashed in the Mediterranean Sea after leaving Beirut.
