Today, it was reported Disney reinstated James Gunn as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 months after cutting ties with the filmmaker over offensive tweets he wrote years ago, which were brought back into the public sphere by right-wing commentators. What sealed the deal was Walt Disney Studios president Alan Horn reportedly feeling that Gunn made an appropriate public apology and handled the situation well, all things considered.

James Gunn has been one of the most active Marvel Cinematic Universe directors on social media, regularly engaging with fans in a number of ways. He will then move onto Guardians once he completes work on the DC supervillain team-up. It seems that is intact and his new contract states he cannot begin the third Guardians film until he completes The Suicide Squad. Persuaded by Gunn's public apology and his handling of the situation after, Horn made a decision to reverse course and reinstate Gunn. For those that may not recall, Gunn was sacked from Marvel last summer when some old tweets he had made resurfaced.

After he was sacked, Disney condemned Gunn's past social media posts, which included bad jokes about violence and sexual assault against children.

"I am tremendously grateful to every person out there who has supported me over the past few months. Love you to you all". Meanwhile, Warner Bros. tapped Gunn up to write and direct the sequel to Suicide Squad, and it looked like we were done.

And regardless of whether Gunn would of been directing, Pratt said in February that the film would be going forward using Gunn's script.

The cast was very supportive of their director with Bradley Cooper, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista all signing an open letter to get the director back.

The first two installments grossed over US$1.6 billion worldwide and in a rare occurrence, the second movie made more than the first. Deadline reports he will still direct the rival Warner Bros. feature now scheduled for an August 6, 2021 release before returning to the Guardians franchise.
