Six university students have been arrested in Gujrat for playing the uber-popular smartphone game, PUBG.

The ban was announced last week by local authorities to combat what they called the spread of "violent traits" in kids playing PUBG and "Momo challenge", a so-called suicide game. PUBG Mobile also expressed surprise at the ban by local authorities in Rajkot. More so when you consider Prime Minister Modi's comments surrounding the game in January during an interaction with students and teachers which imply a softer stance rather than outright arrests.

Three of the men were arrested on Wednesday, "Our team caught these youths red-handed". "But it is a bailable offence".

"This game is highly addictive and the accused were so engrossed in playing them that they could not even notice our team approaching them", Rohit Raval of Special Operations Group told The Indian Express. Indian media outlets have reported at least 16 arrests so far, though it seems many of those arrests are being treated fairly lightly by authorities, as those arrested have generally been bailed out directly by police. Police Commissioner Manoj Agrawal explained that "people have been booked but there is nothing like arrest in it". While the notification issued by the police is in Gujarati, using translator we were able to make out a couple of things.

PUBG Mobile's ban is allegedly due to the protection of children. "In consonance with our endeavour to continue promoting responsible gaming experience, we are working on the introduction of a healthy gameplay system in India to promote balanced, responsible gaming, including limiting play time for under-aged players", PUBG Mobile added. Now, the Ahmedabad police have issued a notification prohibiting the game from March 14 till the midnight of March 28.

The company also reassured its players that they are on their side and will try their best to find a reasonable solution. "Keeping in mind public safety security and to maintain law and order, I hereby impose a ban on playing PUBG game/MOMO challenge", read the original notification. "As parents, we must guide our children to get the most from technology", he said.
