"Congress has the freedom to pass this resolution and I have the duty to veto it", he said, calling it a "Democrat-sponsored resolution".

The president had threatened a veto of the resolution.

Trump made the construction of a wall along the nearly 2,000-mile-long US-Mexico border a cornerstone of his 2016 presidential campaign, saying Mexico would pay for it.

He hit his usual (exaggerated) talking points on the drugs and criminals pouring over the border and said that Democrats and Republicans could come to an accord on "catch and release" laws in "15 minutes" if the political will was there. "Watch, when you get back to your State, they will LOVE you more than ever before!"

"People hate the word invasion, but that's what it is", Trump continued, calling the resolution "dangerous" and "reckless".

Trump is expected to issue his second veto in the coming weeks over a congressional resolution seeking to end USA backing for the Saudi Arabian-led coalition fighting in Yemen.

ET also recently sat down with Nicholl, where she explained that once the baby is born, we will see less of the Fab Four together. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are to have their own household, in a split from William and Kate's royal personnel.

Trump insists he's on solid legal ground, however.

"Many such emergencies dealt with matters less threatening than the ongoing crisis on the southern border. Presidents have exercised broad discretion in determining what challenges and situations amount to national emergencies". "That shift has placed a substantial strain on border-security resources". In a statement, Republican senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee said: "Never before has a president asked for funding, Congress has not provided it, and the president then has used the National Emergencies Act of 1976 to spend the money anyway".

In challenging Trump on Thursday, only one Republican who is up for re-election next year - Susan Collins of ME - voted for the disapproval resolution. The resolution had previously passed the Democrat-controlled House. The dozen senators who went against the White House were Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Roy Blunt of Missouri, Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, Rand Paul of Kentucky, Rob Portman of Ohio, Marco Rubio of Florida, Jerry Moran of Kansas, Roger Wicker of MS, and Mitt Romney and Mike Lee, both of Utah.

Trump's reelection campaign began fundraising off the veto early Friday afternoon, sending out an email asking supporters to donate to a "Official Wall Defense Fund".

Barr also made remarks and said President Trump's emergency declaration on the issue is "firmly grounded" in the law.
