Maduro's government in January cut ties with the US over its recognition of Guaido as Venezuela's rightful leader, a stand taken by about 50 other countries that contend Maduro's re-election previous year was rigged and that he has no legitimacy. The U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has announced on Monday, March 11, 2019, that it will withdraw all remaining U.S. personnel from the U.S. Embassy in Caracas this week.

"Today, all USA diplomats remaining in Venezuela departed the country", he said in a statement, adding that it is "a hard moment for them".

The last remaining US diplomats in Caracas have left Venezuela "for the time being", Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday shortly after they and their Marine guards boarded a flight for the United States.

In his statement, Pompeo praised the diplomats on an emotional day as they abandoned the embassy.

"They are fully dedicated to our mission of supporting the Venezuelan people's aspirations to live in a democracy and build a better future for their families", he added.

James Story, who was the top-ranking USA diplomat in Venezuela, said in a video message that most Venezuelans don't support Maduro and that the government had used "the threat of armed gangs" against its people. Faced with questions about the recognition amounting to only a quarter of the world's countries, the State Department has repeatedly argued that the number doesn't matter, because the countries that sided with the USA are "democracies" and that is supposed to count for more somehow.

National Assembly leader Juan Guaido, who is recognized by several nations including the United States as the interim leader of Venezuela, said Friday has distributed aid in the country.

Maduro blamed the blackouts on alleged sabotage engineered by the US and the Venezuelan opposition.

Guaido denied the allegations at an anti-Maduro protest Tuesday. Despite this, he said the US will continue to stand with self-proclaimed interim President Juan Guaido. But he was remarkably complimentary of the charge d'affaires, James "Jimmy" Story, whom he described as professional, though he said they had not met.
