The 28-year-old Australian man accused of yesterday's terror attack that left at least 49 people dead in Christchurch has appeared in court this morning, charged with murder.

It wasn't until Yama rewatched the gunman's video of the rampage - which he streamed on Facebook Live - and saw his father lying dead on his back that he realised his father did not escape.

Following Friday's shooting at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern vowed to change the country's gun laws, though she didn't immediately specify how.

Aziz said: "He gets into his vehicle and I just got the gun and threw it on his window like an arrow and blasted his window".

Police say they will continue guarding mosques around the country until further notice.

Twelve operating theatres worked through the night on the more than 40 people wounded, said hospital authorities.

Tarrant is scheduled to appear in court again on April 5.

A teary-eyed Ardern said she brought messages of love, support and grief on behalf of all New Zealanders to the crowd gathered at Canterbury Refugee Resettlement and Resources Centre.

Police urged all mosques across New Zealand to stay closed over the weekend for security reasons.

While interpretation of Islamic law regarding burials varies, burying a person as soon as possible after death is a fundamental principal of Islam, usually no more than 24 hours later. Therefore, as with so many high profile attackers in the USA, there was nothing to prevent him from passing background checks to acquire a gun license. Tarrant did not apply to have the judge suppress his name from the media, Australian broadcaster ABC reports.

She said Tarrant, who has been arrested and charged with murder and committing a terrorist act, had allegedly used five firearms, including two semi-automatic weapons, two shotguns and a lever-action firearm.

The AR-15 is a semi-automatic version of the United States military M16 rifle. All the weapons were legally obtained.

Police Association President Chris Cahill backed tighter gun laws, saying the weapons used in the mosque shootings were banned in Australia after the Port Arthur massacre in 1996 in which 35 people were gunned down.

"Just around the entrance door there were elderly people sitting there praying and he just started shooting at them", Mazharuddin told Sky. The suspect appeared to be a white supremacist motivated by USA -based extremism, having posted a manifesto online declaring his hatred for Muslims and idolizing US extremist movements.

Ardern said she had spoken with Trump, who asked how he could help.

Among the wounded, two were in critical condition, including a four-year-old child, said Police Commissioner Mike Bush.

"You may have chosen us", Ardern said, addressing the suspect.

"Fijian hearts are breaking for our brothers and sisters in New Zealand - a place where an atrocity of this nature is shocking nearly beyond comprehension".
