The speedster had been banned for his alleged involvement in the spot-fixing scandal in IPL 2013.

Sreesanth has argued that the life ban was unfair accusing the Delhi Police to resort to torture to get his confessions in the spot fixing scandal.

Cricketer S Sreesanth expressed hope with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and stated that he will return to cricket soon.

"It is a welcome move by the Supreme Court that they have instructed BCCI to have a re-look at Sreesanth's ban". Later, the division bench of the high court had restored the ban on a petition filed by the BCCI against the single-judge bench's order. It should be also noted that the court rejected Sreesanth's request that he should not be punished by any means, as he was acquitted in the spot-fixing case. "As far as Sreesanth being brought back to mainstream cricket, I have no comment to make", Khanna said.

Sreesanth, along with Mumbai spinner Ankit Chavan and Haryana's Ajit Chandila, were suspended for life by a BCCI disciplinary committee in 2013, a decision that the player had challenged in court. In August 2017, the Kerala High Court had lifted the life ban imposed on Sreesanth and also set aside all proceedings against him.

Kecmanovic was the first lucky loser to reach the quarter-finals at the tournament since it became a Masters 1000 event in 1990. Bencic's victory set up a semi-final against eighth seed Angelique Kerber, who beat error-prone Venus Williams 7-6 (7/3), 6-3.

"The order dated 13.09.2013 of the disciplinary committee only to the extent of imposing sanction of lifetime ban is set aside".

The Supreme Court made it clear its order will not impact the criminal proceedings now pending against Sreesanth in the Delhi High Court.

"This is a Supreme Court order and obviously a call needs to be taken".

A bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan, asked the BCCI to decide afresh on the point of the quantum of punishment given to Sreesanth. "I just want to play whatever cricket I can", said Sreesanth, who has been a part of the 2007 World T20 and 2011 ODI World Cup winning squads.

Thereafter, in August a year ago, a single judge of the Kerala High Court had lifted the life ban and set aside all proceedings by the BCCI.
